북한에서의 인삼에 관한 의학적 연구

Abstract

북한 연구자가 출판한 인삼의 의학적 사용에 대한 논문을 대상으로 동향을 파악하고 그 의의를 고찰하였다. 2022년 11월 30일 기준, 통일부 북한자료센터와 북한과학기술네트워크에서 "인삼"을 검색한 결과 225편의 논문이 확인되었으며, 그중 의학적 연구를 다룬 105편 중 64편이 전문열람 가능했다. 연구에 포함된 논문은 최종적으로 58편이며, 학문분류는 두 명의 의학박사 간 논의를 통해 이뤄졌다. 동물실험을 다룬 논문이 49편이었고, 임상분야 원저 및 종설논문은 9편이었다. 이는 북한에서 전통의학과 현대의학의 병행 연구가 활발히 이뤄졌음을 시사한다. 연구는 주로 기초의학(20편), 내분비대사내과학(9편), 혈액종양내과학(8편) 등 다양한 분야에서 진행되었다. 또한, 많은 논문이 김일성, 김정일, 김정은의교시를 인용하며 연구목적을 설명하고 있으며, 이는 북한 의학 연구가 정치적 이념과 연관성이 있음을 보여준다. 예방의학 및 일차의료 논문 5편을 통해 북한 보건의료의 기본 성격인 고려의학과 현대의학의 병행, 대중 참여 등을 확인할 수 있다. 이들 논문은 인삼을 포함한 고려약물이 감기나 만성 간장애, 뇌 노화 등에 효과적임을 주장하지만, 연구 방법론적 한계가 노출되어 있었다. 예를 들어, 동물실험에서 표본크기가 작고 통계 방법이 명확하지 않은 경우가 많았다. 결론적으로, 인삼 연구는 북한에서 고려의학의 우수성을 강조하며 선전도구로 활용되는경향을 배제할 수 없으며, 연구의 과학적 엄밀성을 담보하기 어려운 경우가 적지않았다.

In this study, we analyzed research papers published by North Korean authorson the medical use of ginseng, aiming to identify trends and evaluate theirsignificance. As of November 30, 2022, a search for “ginseng” in the Ministryof Unification's North Korea Information Center and North Korea Science andTechnology Network yielded 225 results. Of the 105 studies focused on medicalresearch, 64 were fully accessible, and 58 were included in this analysis afterclassification by two medical doctors. Most publications were original researcharticles (49) on animal experiments, with 9 clinical studies, indicating activeresearch in both traditional and modern medicine in North Korea. The researchspanned various fields, including basic medicine, gastroenterology, and endocrinology. Many papers cited the teachings of the North Korean leaders KimIl-sung, Kim Jong-il, and Kim Jong-un to explain their research objectives,reflecting an association of political ideology with medical research in the country. Additionally, five papers on preventive medicine and primary healthcarehighlighted the coexistence of traditional and modern medicine and publicengagement, which are key features of North Korean healthcare. Althoughthese studies suggest that ginseng and Koryo medicine are effective in treatingailments such as colds, chronic liver disease, and brain aging, methodologicalshortcomings were observed. For instance, the animal experiments ofteninvolved small sample sizes and lacked clear statistical methods. In conclusion,research on ginseng in North Korea often tends to be used as a propaganda toolto emphasize the superiority of Koryo medicine, and there have been frequentinstances where ensuring scientific rigor in these studies has been challenging.
