『질마재 신화』에 나타난 귀향의 의미

Abstract

본 논문은 “질마재 신화”에 나타난 귀향의 의미를 고찰했다. 논의의 전제로 기이(奇異, 紀異), 습유(拾遺), 유사(遺事)의 노래로 “질마재 신화”를 재규정했다. “질마재 신화”는 서정주의 출발점이자 완결점을 지시하는 시집으로 지목되어 왔다. 질마재로 인해 방랑이 시작되고, 근원적인 상실의 지점에 소재한 원적의 의미에 대한 탐문이 시작되며, 귀향과 귀환을 희구하는 강렬한 열망이 시적인 동력으로 작동한다. 서정주의 초기시에 나타난 질마재의 형상은 바로 그러한 의미에서 읽을 수 있었다. 그러나 시인이 ‘질마재 마을의 이야기’를 ‘질마재 신화’로 고쳤을 때 발생하는 가치 물음은 다른 차원의 물음을 촉발한다. ‘질마재 마을의 신화’는 이야기꾼 화자를 명명하면서 시작된다. ‘신화’는 괴력난신(怪力亂神), 자연, 인간, 문화의 차이마저 무화한 수평상징으로 읽힌다. “질마재 신화”는 바로 그런 의미에서 기이, 습유의 모음에 가깝다. ‘질마재 신화’는 친밀성과 영원성이 뒤얽힌 “친면 있는 귀신들과의 사귐”의 교유록이며, 귀신과 인간과 노래가 공속하는 질마재 마을의 근본 질서는 “은형(隱形)”의 원리다. 질마재의 이야기꾼 화자는 마지막까지 시인이기에 역설적으로 ‘역사의 창건자’로 불멸한다. 바로 그 이야기를 습유하는 논평자 시인의 특권적인 지위는 “질마재 신화”의 핵심을 이룬다. 이야기꾼 화자들이 살아내 온 축제, 노래, 유사 속에 질마재가 있기 때문이다. “질마재 신화” 속에서 시인은 성처녀들이 남긴 ‘질마재 이야기’를 습유하는 논평적인 화자 주체를 자처한다. 논평자 화자는 공동체 전체의 기억을 해석하는 자를 자처한다. 그가 대리발화하는 노래 속에서 시적인 상상력이 움트고, 바로 그 순간 하나의 공동체로 공속하는 고향의 의미가 자리매김한다.

This paper examines the meaning of homecoming in “Jilmajae Myth”. As a premise for the discussion, the study redefines “Jilmajae Myth” as a composition of songs of peculiarity (gi-i, 奇異), collected fragments (seub-yu, 拾遺), and narratives of remembrance (yusa, 遺事). “Jilmajae Myth” has been regarded as both the starting and ending point of Seo Jeong-ju's poetry. The wandering begins with Jilmajae, prompting an inquiry into the meaning of the original home, situated at the core of fundamental loss. This longing for return and homecoming operates as a poetic driving force, a theme strongly present in Seo Jeong-ju's early poetry. However, the shift from ‘The Story of Jilmajae Village’ to “Jilmajae Myth” introduces new value questions of a different dimension. The phrase “Jilmajae Myth” begins with the naming of the narrator, the storyteller. The ‘myth’ itself is read as a horizontal symbol, nullifying the distinctions between supernatural beings, nature, humans, and culture. In this sense, “Jilmajae Myth” closely resembles a collection of the peculiar and the forgotten. It serves as a record of intimate interactions with spirits—what the poet describes as “communion with familiar ghosts.” In Jilmajae Village, where spirits, humans, and songs coexist, the fundamental order follows the principle of “eun-hyeong (隱形, invisibility)”. The storyteller of Jilmajae remains a poet until the very end, paradoxically ensuring his immortality as the ‘founder of history.’ The privileged status of the poetic narrator, who collects and interprets these stories, forms the essence of “Jilmajae Myth”. This is because Jilmajae exists in the festivals, songs, and narratives lived out by the storytellers. Within “Jilmajae Myth”, the poet assumes the role of the commentator-narrator who gathers and interprets the stories left behind by the village's sacred maidens. The poetic narrator positions himself as the interpreter of collective memory, giving voice to the community's history. As poetic imagination takes root within his recited poetry, the meaning of home emerges as a shared space of belonging.
