Abstract

대만 영화 산업은 100년 이상의 역사를 자랑하며 중국 대륙 영화와 홍콩 영화, 해외 화교 영화와 함께 중화권 영화의 판도를 형성했다. 최근 대만 영화에 대한 연구와 관심이 증가한 이유는 에드워드 양 감독의 작품에서 대만의 역사와 문화적 배경을 바탕으로 형성된 ‘재지성(在地性)’이 두드러지게 드러났기 때문이다. 그는 세계적으로 유명한 대만 감독이자 대만 신전영 운동(New Film Movement)의 주역으로, 독특한 영화 창작 방식으로 대만과 세계 영화에 깊은 영향을 미쳤다. 이 논문은 에드워드 양 감독의 7편 반(半)의 영화를 토대로 ‘재지성’의 표현적 서사 방식과 의미를 탐구하고자 한다. 그의 작품에서 도시 공간 활용의 독창성과 일제(日帝) 시대의 기억 탐구, 청소년 이미지의 섬세한 묘사 등을 통해 그의 독특한 창작 예술성을 재조명한다. 특히 그의 작품에서 나타난 ‘재지성’은 대만 문화를 전 세계에 알리며 국제적인 공감대를 형성한다. 에드워드 양의 연구와 실천은 대만 현대 사회와 역사에 대한 깊은 성찰과 기록으로서의 가치를 지닌다.

Taiwan’s film industry boasts a history of more than 100 years and has shaped the landscape of Greater China films along with mainland Chinese films, Hong Kong films, and overseas Chinese films. The reason why research and interest in Taiwanese films have increased recently is because the ‘locality’ formed based on Taiwan’s historical and cultural background was clearly revealed in director Edward Yang’s works. He is a world-renowned Taiwanese director and a leading figure in Taiwan’s New Film Movement, and has had a profound impact on Taiwanese and world cinema with his unique way of film creation. This paper seeks to explore the expressive narrative style and meaning of ‘locality’ based on director Edward Yang’s seven and a half films. His work sheds new light on his unique creative artistry through originality in the use of urban space, exploration of memories from the Japanese colonial era, and detailed depiction of youth images. In particular, the ‘locality’ shown in his works promotes Taiwanese culture to the world and forms an international consensus. Edward Yang’s research and practice have value as a deep reflection and record of Taiwan’s modern society and history.
