국제 디자인 페어 전시 공간의 환경적으로 지속가능한 노력에 관한 연구

Abstract

연구배경 인류세의 도래와 함께 대량생산과 소비문화가 확산되며 박람회는 산업 진흥과 국제 교류의 플랫폼으로 발전해왔으나, 단기간에 대규모 자원을 소비하고 막대한 폐기물과 탄소 배출을 유발함으로써 환경에 부정적인 영향을 초래한다. 최근 일부 미술관 중심의 지속가능한 전시 실천은 나타나지만, 박람회 형식의 전시에서는 관련 노력이 어떻게 실현되고 있는지에 대한 체계적 분석이 부족하다. 이에 본 연구는 국제 디자인 페어의 전시공간을 일회성 소비 구조가 아닌, 자원 순환과 환경 인식 공유가 실천되는 공간으로 보고, 실제 운영에 반영된 지속가능성 전략을 사례 분석을 통해 고찰하였다. 하노버 원칙과 국제 지속가능성 가이드라인을 분석 기준으로 설정하고, 사례 분석을 통해 공간 구성과 자원 운용 방식에 반영된 실천 양상을 도출하였다. 이를 바탕으로 전시기획의 실천적 기준을 제시하고, 향후 지속가능한 전시 설계를 위한 기초자료로 활용될 수 있음을 제안한다. 연구방법 컨벤션 센터는 산업형 전시를 수용하는 유동적인 공간으로, 전시 종료 후 대부분의 구조물이 철거되어 환경에 미치는 영향이 큰 공간으로 인식된다. 이에 따라 본 연구의 범위는 컨벤션 센터의 전시장과 전시 부스로 한정하였으며, 이 공간들에서 환경적 지속가능성이 어떻게 조성되고 실천되는지를 분석하였다. 분석 기준으로는 하노버 원칙을 활용하였으며, 문헌고찰과 사례조사를 통해 지속가능한 실천 사례를 도출하고, 각 디자인 페어의 지속가능성 실현 방식을 통합적으로 논의하였다. 연구결과 국제 디자인 페어의 전시공간에서는 하노버 원칙에 기반한 분석 기준에 따라 다양한 지속가능성 실천이 적용되고 있음을 확인하였다. 전시 필수 요소인 가구와 벽체는 재사용을 용이하게 하기 위해 모듈화 및 대여 시스템으로 구성되어 자원의 수명을 연장하고 있으며, 폐기물은 전문기관과 협력하여 분리배출 및 재활용이 체계적으로 이루어지고 있다. 또한, 벽체 사용 최소화, 재활용 소재 활용 등 환경을 고려한 공간 구성 방식이 확산되고 있으며, 특별 전시와 강연을 통한 환경 인식 제고, 지역사회 및 컨벤션 센터와의 연계 전략도 함께 나타나고 있다. 이러한 결과는 전시공간이 일회성 소비의 장소를 넘어, 환경 인식과 지속가능성 실천이 이루어지는 공간으로 확장될 수 있음을 시사한다. 결론 본 연구는 국제 디자인 페어의 전시공간에서 실천된 환경적 지속가능성 전략을 하노버 원칙과 국제 지속가능성 가이드라인에 기반하여 체계적으로 분석하고, 공간 구성 및 자원 운용 방식의 특성을 도출하였다. 분석 결과, 전시공간의 지속가능성 실천은 자원 순환과 구조적 유연성에 중점을 두어 이루어졌으며, 항목별 실현 수준에는 차이가 나타났다. 이를 통해 전시 산업에서의 지속가능성 실현 방안을 구체적으로 이해하고, 디자인 페어의 지속가능성 강화를 위한 기초자료로 기여할 수 있다. 아울러, 지속가능한 전시 실천은 다양한 환경적·사회적·기술적 요인이 복합적으로 작용하는 분야이므로, 향후에는 보다 다각적인 기준과 접근 방식을 포함한 후속 연구가 요구된다.

Background With the advent of the Anthropocene, the proliferation of mass production and consumer culture has positioned fairs as key platforms for industrial development and international exchange. However, these events often consume substantial resources over short periods and generate significant carbon emissions and waste, resulting in negative environmental impacts. While sustainable exhibition practices have emerged in some art museums, systematic analysis of such efforts within fair-type exhibitions remains limited. This study reinterprets the exhibition space of international design fairs not as a site of one-time consumption, but as a venue for practicing resource circulation and fostering environmental awareness. Using case analysis, the study investigates sustainability strategies reflected in actual operational practices. Based on the Hannover Principles and international sustainability guidelines, the study derives patterns of sustainability observed in spatial composition and resource management. The findings aim to provide practical standards for sustainable exhibition planning. Methods Focusing on convention center exhibition halls and booths, spaces recognized for their environmental impact due to frequent structural dismantling, the study examines how environmental sustainability is implemented. The Hannover Principles served as the primary analytical framework. Sustainable practices were identified through literature review and case studies, and the approaches adopted by each design fair were comparatively discussed. Results The findings confirm that international design fairs apply various sustainability practices aligned with the Hannover Principles. Key strategies include the modularization and rental of exhibition furniture and walls to promote reuse, as well as systematic waste separation and recycling in collaboration with specialized institutions. Environmentally conscious spatial strategies, such as minimizing the use of partitions and incorporating recyclable materials, were also observed. In addition, exhibitions integrated educational programs, including special installations and lectures, while strengthening connections with local communities and hosting venues. These outcomes suggest that exhibition spaces can evolve beyond temporary consumption environments into platforms for sustainability engagement and environmental consciousness. Conclusions This study provides a structured analysis of sustainability strategies in exhibition spaces of international design fairs, grounded in the Hannover Principles and internationally recognized sustainability guidelines. Sustainability efforts are primarily focused on resource circulation and structural adaptability, though variations in implementation are noted across cases. The study offers foundational insights for reinforcing sustainability in exhibition planning and highlights the need for future research incorporating broader evaluative criteria and multidimensional approaches, given the complex environmental, social, and technical nature of sustainable exhibition practices.
