박목월 미발표 유고작에 나타난 장소성 ― 제주와 경주를 중심으로

Abstract

박목월의 미발표 유고작이 소개되어 관심을 끌고 있다. 주제를 분류해보면일상, 신앙, 가족, 사랑, 제주, 경주, 동심 등이 키워드가 될 만하다. 그 가운데가장 눈에 띄는 자료는 ‘고향과 타향’을 대비적으로 환기하는 시편들이다. 고성에서 태어나 경주와 대구에서 자랐고 서울에서 오래 산 시인은 고향에 가서도고독과 만나고 타향에 와서도 고향을 발견하는 이중성을 보여준다. 그러한 장소성을 보여주는 작품들은 고향 경주, 전쟁이 끝나갈 무렵 몇 개월 지냈던 제주표상을 담고 있다. 박목월에게 제주는 생명력과 다짐의 순간을 주기도 했지만, 원초적으로는 가장 낯설고 가난하고 쓸쓸한 순간을 가져다주었다. 이번 미발표유고 시편들은 그러한 실물감을 전해준다는 점에서 문학사적 발견의 결과라고해야 할 듯하다. 또한 경주는 박목월이 어린 시절을 보낸 그의 고향이다. 다수시편에서 그곳은 박목월에게 원초적 회귀 의식과 낯섦의 감각을 동시에 준 장소로 등장한다. 결국 제주와 경주 시편의 의미는 그것들이 박목월 시의 원심과구심을 함축한다는 점에 있다. 제주가 일종의 낭만적 도피행의 공간이었다면, 경주는 고단할 때마다 그 헛됨을 알고 찾아온 귀환의 장소이다. 그 경우 제주는낯설고 쓸쓸한 곳, 경주는 낯익고 편안한 곳으로 이원화될 수밖에 없었을 것이다. 그랬다면 박목월 시의 장소성은 평면성을 넘지 못했을 것이다. 그러나 박목월의 시에는 낯익기만 할 것 같은 곳에도 낯섦이 존재하고, 낯선 곳에서도 삶의활기를 만나는 속성이 어김없이 깃들여 있다. 그것이 박목월 시의 의미론적 복합성을 잘 보여주고 있다.

Recently discovered unpublished poems by Park Mok-wol have drawn considerable attention for revealing new dimensions of his poetic world. Key themes in these works include everyday life, faith, family, love, Jeju, Gyeongju, and childhood innocence. Among them, the most remarkable are the poems that evoke a contrast between the homeland and places away from home. Born in Goseong, raised in Gyeongju and Daegu, and having lived for a long period in Seoul, Park presents a dual sensibility—encountering solitude even in his hometown and rediscovering a sense of home in distant places. The poems vividly express a poetics of place through depictions of Gyeongju, Park’s childhood home, and Jeju, where he resided briefly near the end of the Korean War. For Park, Jeju emerges as a space of vitality and renewal, yet also of deep estrangement and poverty. In this regard, the newly revealed poems constitute a significant literary discovery, conveying tangible experiences of time and place. While Gyeongju serves as a site of nostalgic return and primal belonging, Jeju becomes a space of romantic escape and existential solitude. However, Park’s sense of place resists such a simplistic dichotomy: he encounters strangeness within the familiar and discovers vitality within unfamiliar places. This complex interplay of familiarity and estrangement ultimately defines the semantic richness and spatial depth of Park Mok-wol’s poetry.
