안드레이 타르코프스키의 영화에 내재된 러시아 상징주의 예술철학

Abstract

본 연구는 안드레이 타르코프스키의 영화가 ‘상징주의’의 관점에서 해석되어서는 안된다는 학계의 관점은 반드시 수정되어야 한다는 인식에서 출발했다. 이러한 오류는‘러시아 상징주의’가 국내에서는 다른 국가의 문예 이론에 비해 상대적으로 대중적 인지도가 낮은 것에서 기인한 문제인 만큼, 본고에서는 이에 대한 예술사적 개괄과 함께이 문예사조를 이해할 수 있는 사상가들이나 예술가들의 관점을 함께 제시하였다. 타르코프스키 자신이 집필한 저술에서는 19세기 말 20세기 초 러시아의 예술과 사상을 주도했던 안드레이 벨르이, 뱌체슬라프 이바노프, 블라지미르 솔로비요프, 파벨 플로렌스키, 니콜라이 베르쟈예프 등에 대한 감독 자신의 깊은 관심이 드러나 있음에도 불구하고, 지금까지 타르코프스키 영화 연구에서는 이에 대해 주목하지 않았기 때문이다. 러시아 상징주의는 19세기 말 프랑스 상징주의의 영향을 받은 시인들로부터 시작되었지만, 단순히 문학적 개념에 머무르지 않고 예술 전반에 영향을 미친 하나의 세계관이되었다. 그리고 이 흐름에 속한 상징주의자들은 프랑스를 비롯한 서구의 영향에서 벗어나 독자적인 예술관을 확립하기 시작하며, 상징을 통해 자신의 우주관을 전개해 나갔다. 타르코프스키 역시 영적인 감수성을 지닌 인간이 한 예술 작품에서 받는 인상과순수한 종교적 체험 사이에는 유사성이 있다는 점을 인식했다. 나아가 그는 종교와 창조, 예술과 신비가 밀접한 연관이 있으며 예술이란 삶과 세계를 변형시킬 수 있는 수단이라고 보았던 대표적인 예술가였다. 이러한 관점을 토대로 본고에서는 인간 존재를성찰하는 우주의식과 이 신비를 삶과 예술로 표현하는 타르코프스키의 세계관을 추적하며, 러시아 상징주의 예술철학의 관점에서 그의 작품세계를 톺아보았다.

This study originates from the conviction that the prevailing scholarly position- that the films of Andrei Tarkovsky should not be interpreted through the lens of Symbolism- requires a fundamental reassessment. Such a misconception largely derives from the comparatively limited recognition of Russian Symbolism within domestic academic circles, especially when contrasted with other national literary theories. In response, this paper offers an art-historical overview of Russian Symbolism and presents the perspectives of the key thinkers and artists who defined the movement. Although Tarkovsky’s own writings reveal a deep engagement with figures who shaped Russian artistic and intellectual life at the turn of the twentieth century - such as Andrei Bely, Vyacheslav Ivanov, Vladimir Solovyov, Pavel Florensky, and Nikolai Berdyaev - in the Korean academic community who study Tarkovsky Films has thus far paid insufficient attention to these connections. On this basis, the present study traces Tarkovsky’s worldview -his cosmic consciousness reflecting upon human existence and his attempt to express metaphysical mystery through life and art- and reexamines his oeuvre through the philosophical prism of Russian Symbolism.
