중국 민족주의 영화에 나타난 중국 대중의 감정구조: 영화 <장진호>의 서사와 사회적 맥락

Abstract

이 연구는 중국 영화 <장진호>를 연구 대상으로 서사 분석을 진행함으로써 중국 민족주의 영화의 의미와 특성, 그리고 중국 대중들이 공유하는 감정구조를 밝히고자 하였다. 구체적으로 본문에서는 채트먼의 서사 분석을 활용해 계열체 분석과 통합체 분석, 담화 분석 등을 통해 <장진호> 영화가 중국 사회에서 대중의 감정구조를 어떤 방식으로 형성하고 있으며 이것이 사회적 맥락과 연결되는 양상에 관해 분석하고자 하였다. 연구 결과, <장진호> 영화는 주인공 ‘우완리’가 ‘항미원조 전쟁’에 참여한다는 서사를 구축해 개인의 운명과 거시적 서사구조를 결합시키고 있었다. 통합체 분석을 통해 관련 서사가 항미원조 전쟁이 국가를 보호하기 위한 정당한 행위였다는 결과를 도출하고 있음을 알 수있었다. 또한, 계열체 분석을 통해 영화가 미국과 중국의 관계를 등장인물에 투영해 이항 대립적 서사를 구축하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 담화 분석을 통해 영화가 서술 시점을 활용해 감정 표현을 극대화하고 관객의 공감을 얻어내는 전략을 활용하고 있음이 발견되었다. 결과적으로 영화의 서사, 인물, 플롯이 전달하는 메시지는 민족주의적 정서에 소구하는 것이었고, 이는중국 대중들의 감정구조를 효과적으로 자극해 중국내 흥행을 가능하게 한 장치가 되었다. 동시에 이는 최근 중국 정부가 적극적으로 활용했던 민족주의적 정서, 미국 견제 등의 맥락을 영화란 대중문화 콘텐츠에 유연하게 적용함으로써 일련의 통치 기능을 수행하는 것이었다. 즉, <장진호>는 반미 정서를 활용해 미국을 견제하는 동시에, 그와 상반되는 중국적 정서와 서사를 차용해 중국 대중들의 민족주의를 둘러싼 감정구조를 형성하고 있었다.

This study aims to reveal the representation, meaning and characteristics of Chinese nationalist films and the structure of feeling shared by the Chinese public, focusing on the narrative of the Chinese film series called by <The Battle at Lake Changjin>. Specifically, this essay analyzes how the film <The Battle at Lake Changjin> expresses the structure of feeling shared in Chinese society and how it connects to the social context through Chatman’s narrative analysis, mainly by story analysis (paradigmatic analysis, syntagmatic analysis) and discourse analysis. The result shows that the film <The Battle at Lake Changjin> combines the fate of the individuals with a grand narrative by constructing the story of the protagonist ‘Wu Wanli’ participating in the Korean War. This narrative concludes that the war was a legitimate act to ‘protect the home and defend the country’, as revealed through syntagmatic analysis. Paradigmatic analysis shows that the film projects the relationship between the United States and China onto its characters, establishing a binary opposition. Discourse analysis reveals that the film maximizes emotional expression and gains audience empathy by utilizing narrative perspectives. Consequently, the message and emotion conveyed by the film’s narrative, characters, and plot stimulates nationalist sentiment, effectively triggering the structure of feeling shared by the Chinese public and enabling box office success in China. However, this point is criticized because it performs a series of governance functions by flexibly applying the context of recent nationalist sentiments and anti-American stance attempted by the Xi Jinping administration to the film. In other words, <The Battle at Lake Changjin> series stirs nationalist emotions among contemporary Chinese audiences by incorporating anti-American elements, thus countering the United States’ perspective and promoting the Chinese narrative.
