테크놀로지와 청취의 테크닉: 워크맨에서 오르페우스 장치까지

Abstract

이 논문은 모바일 음악 재생 테크놀로지가 어떻게 새로운 청취의 테크닉을 만들어 내었는지를 추적한다. 워크맨 이후 MP3플레이어, 스마트폰, 무선 이어폰에 이르는 장치는 청취를 개인화했고, 사운드스케이프를 이동 가능한 것으로 만들었다. 이뿐만 아니라 소리를 외부에서 전해지는 하나의 ‘정보’가 아닌 신체화된 경험 혹은 정동으로 전환시켰다. 이러한 테크놀로지의 결과로 등장한 ‘쩌는 음색’과 ASMR은 테크놀로지의 발전이 초래한 매우 중요한 변화가 청취 테크닉의 변화임을 증언해 주고 있다. 더 나아가 노이즈 캔슬링, 화이트 노이즈 발생기, 수면 사운드 및 집중용 사운드 발생 앱과 같은 오르페우스 장치(Orphic devices)는 청취자가 수동적 입장을 넘어, 자신 스스로 청취의 주체가 될 수 있는 자유마저 만들어 주었다. 하지만 이러한 테크놀로지는 그것을 향유할 수 있는 사람과 그렇지 못한 사람들 사이의 사회적 차이를 만들어 낼 뿐 아니라 개인의 자유처럼 포장되어 있는 사회적 규율과 효율성의 요구를 내면화하는 방식으로 작동할 위험 또한 내포한다. 이 논문은 이러한 위험에도 불구하고 테크놀로지가 만든 새로운 감각, 새로운 청취의 테크닉이 기존 청취 방식에 이미 깃들어 있는 사회적 위계질서와 권력을 드러내고 전복할 수 있는 잠재성을 가지고 있음을 밝힌다.

This paper explores how mobile recording and playback technologies have transformed techniques of listening. From the Walkman to wireless earphones, such devices have individualized and embodied listening, turning sound into the affect, the bodily experience. Phenomena like the “killer tone” and ASMR testify to significant shifts in techniques of listening. The Orphic devices—including noise canceling systems, white noise generators, and sound mac hines— enable listeners to be a host of the sound and to have a freedom to manipulate the sound. The technology, however, creates not only the differences between the social strata, but also the risk of embodying the latent desires of the new liberal ideology. Ultimately, the paper argues that these conditions invite artistic inquiry, where new techniques of listening reshape the relations between sensation, affect, and the world through the new mode of embodied sensation.
