어린이의 참여형 디자인 경험에 대한 의미 탐색 -화성시어린이문화센터 어린이 디자인 워크숍 사례를 통해-

Abstract

참여형 디자인은 사용자의 적극적인 디자인 과정 참여를 유도하는 디자인 접근법으로 다양한 분야에서 주목받고 있다. 특히 사용자의 의견을 수렴하는 제한적 형태에서 나아가 디자인 파트너로서 디자인 과정 전반에 능동적으로 참여하는 형태로 진행되고 있다. 반면 어린이 사용자를 디자인 과정에 참여시켜 그들의 의견과 관점을 반영하려는 시도는 아직 제한적인 범위에 머물러 있으나, 어린이를 보다 의미 있게 참여시키려는 다양한 시도와 과정은 꾸준히 이어지고 있다. 이러한 흐름을 바탕으로 본 연구는 참여형 디자인이 지향하는 민주적 가치와 공동 의사결정의 의미에 주목하여 참여 과정이 어린이의 발달을 지원하는 경험의 장으로서 기능할 수 있음을 탐색하고자 한다. 본 연구는 디자인 과정에 참여한 어린이의 경험을 탐색하기 위한 사례연구로서, 초등학생을 대상으로 진행된 참여형 디자인 워크숍을 관찰한다. 디자인 참여 과정을 어린이의 발달이 지원될 수 있는 상호 학습적 경험의 장으로 바라보고, 그 과정에서 나타나는 주요 발화와 행동 및 변화 양상을 중심으로 경험의 의미 있는 지점을 살펴보았다. 본 사례는 어린이의 디자인 참여 경험이 그들이 자신의 경험과 환경을 새롭게 인식하며 변화에 주체적으로 개입하는 계기가 될 수 있음을 보여준다. 이는 어린이의 디자인 참여가 결과적 성과뿐 아니라 경험적 성장에도 긍정적 영향을 미칠 수 있음을 시사하며, 향후 참여 기회 확대의 필요성을 뒷받침한다.

Participatory design is a design approach that encourages active user involvement and has gained attention across various fields. It has evolved beyond merely collecting user opinions to a model in which users engage throughout the entire design process as design partners. While attempts to involve child users and reflect their perspectives remain limited, various efforts to engage children more meaningfully continue steadily. Building on this trend, this study focuses on the democratic values and significance of joint decision-making inherent in participatory design, exploring how the participatory process can function as a developmental space for children. As a case study, this research observes a participatory design workshop conducted with elementary school students. The design participation process was regarded as an interactive learning experience that supports children's development, and its meaningful aspects were examined by focusing on key utterances, behaviors, and patterns of change observed during the process. The case demonstrates that participating in design can provide children with opportunities to perceive their environment and experiences from new perspectives and to engage proactively in change. These findings suggest that children's participation in design can positively influence both tangible outcomes and developmental growth, supporting the need to expand opportunities for future participation.
