『乘槎錄』을 통해 본 19세기 강남의 水運과 物質文明 -표류 지식인 최두찬의 지리․문화 인식 연구-

Abstract

崔斗燦의 『乘槎錄』은 1818년 제주도에서 출발한 최두찬과 그 일행 50여 명이 16일간 표류 끝에 江南에 도착하여 약 6개월에 걸쳐 귀환하는 과정을 기록한 표류기이다. 본고는 표류인 최두찬의 시선을 통해 19세기 강남 水運 문명의 실체를 복원하고, 조선 지식인이 수백 년간 문학적으로 구축해온 ‘이상향 강남’과 직접 목도한 ‘현실의 강남’ 사이의 간극을 규명하고자 한다. 최두찬은 수로 귀환 여정(5월 17일∼6월 23일)을 통해 강남 대운하 체계를 생생히 목격하였다. 그는 수운망이 단순한 교통 인프라가 아니라 상업 도시의 형성과 물류 시스템 전반을 규정하는 핵심 원리임을 파악했다. 귀환 후 별도로 작성한 「室廬說」․「衣服說」․「稼穡說」․「墳墓說」․「舟車說」등 다섯 편의 글에서 그는 상업 자본이 신분 질서를 무력화하고 전문화․분업화가 일상화된 강남 사회의 내부 원리를 체계적으로 분석하였다. 이러한 물질 체험은 최두찬의 小中華 의식을 관념론에서 주체적 문명관으로 발전시키는 결정적 계기가 되었다. 그는 청나라의 물질적 풍요와 합리성은 인정하면서도, 義․信과 같은 정신적 가치가 해체된 청나라를 ‘중화의 가면을 쓴 오랑캐의 땅’으로 규정하였다. 나아가 「분묘설」 분석에서 보이듯, 조선의 비합리적 풍수 관행을 비판하는 동시에 청나라의 정신적 공백을 경계함으로써, 청나라의 합리성을 수용하되 유교의 본질을 지키는 ‘제3의 길’을 모색하였다. 『승사록』은 단순한 표류 기록이 아니라, 물질과 정신의 교차로에서 새로운 문명관을 정립한 조선 지식인의 성찰적 기록이다.

Seungsarok (乘槎錄) is a remarkable account written by Choi Du-chan (崔斗燦), a Joseon scholar who, along with some fifty companions, drifted for sixteen days from Jeju Island before arriving on the shores of Jiangnan in 1818. The text documents approximately six months of travel through Qing China before the group's eventual return home. This paper aims to reconstruct the actual conditions of Jiangnan's water transport civilization in the nineteenth century through Choi's perspective as a castaway, and to illuminate the gap between the idealized image of Jiangnan that Joseon intellectuals had constructed over centuries and the material reality he witnessed firsthand. During the northward journey by waterway (May 17–June 23), Choi closely observed the Grand Canal system and recognized that the water transport network was not merely a means of conveyance but the defining infrastructure of commercial urban formation and logistics across Jiangnan. In five supplementary essays—on dwellings, clothing, agriculture, tombs, and boats and carriages—he systematically analyzed the internal logic of Jiangnan society, in which commercial capital had dismantled status hierarchies and specialization had become the norm of daily life. This encounter with material civilization proved decisive in transforming Choi's Sinocentrist self-perception (小中華 Sojunghwa) from an ideological given into a self-determined civilizational standpoint. While acknowledging Qing China's material prosperity and pragmatic rationality, he characterized it as "barbarian territory wearing the mask of Junghwa," a land where moral values such as righteousness (ui 義) and trustworthiness (sin 信) had dissolved. At the same time, as his analysis of the essay on tombs reveals, he criticized irrational geomantic practices within Joseon itself. Navigating between the spiritual void of Qing pragmatism and the superstitious irrationality of Joseon custom, Choi sought a "third path" that would accept Qing rationality while preserving the essence of Confucian values. Seungsarok is not merely a castaway narrative but a reflective record of a Joseon intellectual forging a new civilizational vision at the crossroads of material and spiritual worlds.
