Abstract
Dimensionless parametric analyses using an improved continuum model for a suspension bridge are performed to study the effect of hanger extensibility on vertical free vibrations. To derive the equations of motion for this model, the coupled differential equations for the vertical free vibrations of the main cable and girder are used, and both a hinged girder and a continuous girder are considered. As the results of the parametric analyses, the hanger extensibility affects the natural frequencies of the higher modes when the relative bending stiffness of the girder is large. Its effect is more pronounced for continuous bridges than hinged bridges. In addition, its effect decreases as the relative length of the side span increases.
