Ischemic heart disease (myocardial ischaemia) is a disease resulting from reduced blood supply to the heart muscle due to coronary artery disease (atherosclerosis of the coronary arteries). Complete occlusion of coronary arteries leads to a heart attack (myocardial infarction). Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death and coronary artery disease is the commonest cause of cardiovascular disease. Several types of medications have been found to help reduce symptoms and in severe cases, balloon and stent angioplasty, and bypass surgery are being operated. However, these procedures may decrease or eliminate symptoms for a while and so far there is no medication controlling the underlying pathogenesis in a cellular basis.-
