Effect of Intervention for Prevention of Catheter-associated Urinary Tract Infections in a Tertiary-care teaching hospital in Korea Yoon Sook Jang1, Hyunjoo Pai2, Sung Hee Oh3, Tae-Yeal Choi4 Office of Hospital Infection Control1; Dept. of Internal Medicine2; Dept. of Pediatrics3; Dept. of Clincal Pathology4;, Hanyang University Hospital, Korea Introduction The urinary tract infection is the most common healthcare-associated infection. Sixty-six % to 86% of nosocomial UTI is known to be associated with urinary instrument such as urinary catheterization. Methods Setting: a university hospital with 863 beds Methods: A prospective surveillance of UTI for the patients in MICU & SICU was performed and the infection rate was analyzed during the period from June 2005 to June 2007. From 2006, the urinary catheterization care was actively educated to the healthcare practitioners; especially the unnecessary bladder irrigation and catheter change were abandoned and other CDC guidelines for UTI prevention were recommended as well. UTI rate was compared between the pre- and post-intervention period. The urinary catheter utilization ratio was also analyzed. Results Pre-Intervention Post-Intervention 2005.6-12 2006.1-6 2006.7-12 2007.1-6 No. of urinary catheter -days 4,215 4,235 3,748 4354 No. of patient days 4,929 4,560 4,248 4,578 Urinary catheter utilization ratio 0.86 0.93 0.88 0.95 No. of urinary catheter -ass. infection pts 53 34 19 17 No. of urinary catheter -days 4,215 4,235 3,748 4,354 1,000 Urinary catheter-associated UTIs 12.57 8.03 5.07 3.90 * Urinary catheter utilization ratios = No. of device days/No. of patient days * Urinary catheter -ass.infection rate = No. of device-ass. Infection pts./No. of device-days × 1000 Conclusions With the active education of urinary catheter care to the healthcare practitioners, the UTI rate decreased significantly, although the urinary catheter utilization ratio did not show a reduction.-
