| dc.description.abstract | Spatially varying ground motion can have a significant influence on longitudinal structures such as bridges and tunnels. While the effect of the spatially varying ground motion on bridges has been extensively studied, there is a lack of study on its effect on underground tunnels. This study generates spatially variable ground motions using an empirical coherency function, from which displacement profiles in longitudinal direction are developed. The longitudinal displacement profile allows performing a pseudo-static analysis instead of a dynamic analysis in estimating the tunnel response due to the spatially varying motion. Three dimensional finite element analysis shows that the spatially variable ground motion imposes high axial stress on the tunnel lining. | - |
