The purpose of this study (one of a trio of interactive projects) was to predict which persons with dementia (PWD) present with aggressive behavior during caregiving, and to identify the environmental conditions associated with such behavior. Using the Need-driven Dementia-compromised Behavior model (NDB), a cross sectional survey was conducted of persons with dementia (N=107) residing in 9 randomly selected nursing homes. Demographic characteristics (mean MMSE 9, age 87) are examined along with social and physical environmental characteristics during an aide administered shower bath. A first order correlation matrix is discussed, (e.g., subjects with aggressive behavior, educational level, MMSE score, NEO factor of agreeableness) and environmental characteristics (nurse-aide demeanor, heat, light, and unit ambiance). The environmental impact for correlates reaching p.05 level of significance are reviewed in terms of translational home-care based research and educational needs of caregivers.-
