Objective: Body surface area and height have been widely used for the indexation of left ventricular mass. In prehypertension, overweight or abdominal obesity are frequently observed. We hypothesized that the relationshiops between LV mass and abdominal obesity is defferent among indexation methods in prehypertension patients. Design and Methods : 114 echocardiograms of prehypertension patients(systolic blood pressure ≥ 120 and <140mmHg, diastolic blood pressure ≥ 80, <90mmHg) were analyzed for the LV mass. The factors determining LV mass including age, sex, body mass index, abdominal circumference, blood pressure, heart rate were investigated. Abdominal obesity was defined by > 80cm in female and >90cm in male. Results: Abdominal obesity was observed in 23/49(46.9%) of male patients and in 43/65(66.1%) of female patients. Age was the only correlating factor of systolic blood pressure and body weight was the only correlating factor fro diastolic blood pressure. For LV mass index per body surface area, age, heart rate, and sex were the independent factors. For LV mass index by height2.7, abdominal circumferences, heart rate, height2.7, and sex were independent factors. Conclusions: In this study, relationship between LV mass index and the abdominal obesity is the main diffference between the indexation methods. Only LV mass index by height2.7 can reflect the increased LV mass resulted from abdominal obesity in prehypertension patients.-
