Objective: Body size and gender are the most important factors influencing left ventricular mass during development. This study is performed to establish the influences of these variables on the left ventricular mass in healthy Korean adult subjects. Design and Methods : 368 subjects(male=184, female=184) with normal body mass index and blood pressure were included for the echocardiographic analysis from the ecchocardiography database of Hanyang University Hospital and of Yangpyung Epidemiology Survey 2004. Left ventricular mass was calculated by the equation of 1.04 x ((IVSd+LVDd+PWTd)3-LVD3) x 0.8 + 0.6. Stroke volume was calculated by Teichholz formula. Stroke work was computed as cuff systolic BP x stroke volume x 0.0144 Results: Stroke work was the most important factor associated with LV mass(adjusted R2=0.501, p <0.001) and body weight, age, sex were independent factors(adjusted 2=0.642). In the regression model including stroke volume, sex. height2.7, LV mass was predictedby the equation of 54.9 + 7.62 x height2.7 + 0.67 x stroke work - 13.2 x gender(male=1, female=2)(constant=54.9±14.7, adjusted R2=0.576, SEE=21.67, p=0.001) Conclusions: Like the studies of the western countries, stroke work, gender, and height 2.7 were important determinant of left ventricular mass in Korean subjects with normal weight and normal blood pressure.-
