dc.description.abstract1) The importance of the vitreous as a pathogenic mechanism of hole formation was recognized early in 20th century. Initial reports concentrated on A-P relationship of vitreous to the retina. 2) Detailed observations of MH formation by Gass led him to hypothesize that macular holes are caused by tangential traction on fovea, commencing with the shrinkage of the attached cortical vitreous. Attenuation has also been drawn to the possible role of the Muller cell/ vitreous cortex interface as causative-
