Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) is a very powerful tool for examining the atomic-resolution images, physical properties, and behaviors of the anchoring phases of organic molecules on a solid surface. And self-assemblies prepared by sulfur-containing organic molecules on metal surfaces have drawn much attention for more than a decade because of the possibility of novel applications as biosensor, molecular recognition, nanolithography, nonlinear optics and corrosion inhibition. As a result, self-assembly and STM in the material research field are core techniques for realization fabrication of nanodevices as well as understanding atomic and molecular world in nanoscience and nanotechnology. In this talk, we will discuss the self-assembly phenomena of organic molecules on a solid surface from a nanoscopic viewpoint.-
