The smart city has become a new megatrend in urban policy worldwide. Since the inauguration of President Moon’s government in 2017, the smart city has emerged as an important focus of attention in Korea. On January 29, 2018, the Korean government announced its new smart city implementation strategy across all ministries of the government. In the case of Korea, the central government plays a much greater role than individual local governments or the private sector in the implementation of smart cities. For this reason, instead of choosing one particular city, this chapter looks into the overall changes of the Korean government’s smart city policy and discusses the accomplishments, limitations, and ways of overcoming the challenges. © 2019 Elsevier Inc.
