- Abstract
- In this paper, I explain what restrictions are imposed on sentences with '-kilay' and why. To do this, sentences with '-kilay' are grouped into three by mood. In declaratives ending with '-ta', '-kilay' means perceiving or realizing some situation in the antecedent clause, and the event of perceiving/realizing provides an occasion for the volitional action of the agent in the consequent clause. In questions and sentences ending with '-ci', '-kilay' does not show the properties that it shows in declaratives. It does not have the meaning of occasion, but that of reason, between the antecedent and consequent clauses. The relation of reason needs one agent who imposes it. always the hearer in questions. In sentences ending with '-ci', however, it needs two agents, one for the epistemic operator '-ci' and the other for the agent who imposes a relation of reason. They may not be the speaker, in which case inference gets involved. In all three, '-kilay' does not have narrower scope than other semantic operators
