The mechanism responsible for the overturn of a reinforced-concrete gravity bridge pier on a sandy bed under a lateral shear load is investigated. A modified Drucker-Prager elasto-plastic cap model was used for nonlinear analysis of the combined performance of the sandy bed and pier. Different mechanisms of sequential failure of unanchored and anchored systems are examined for different load paths in average- and deviator-stress coordinates.-
