Although an automobile is a necessity and a convenience of our modern era, traffic accidents take a great toll on society, both economically and socially. Korea has the unenviable record of having one of the highest traffic accidents and fatality rates. A new and systematic approach to policy making to reduce these accidents is necessary, if Korea plans to join the industrialized world. Advanced motor vehicle safety assessment technology will contribute to the establishment of the long-term plan and vision to enter the leading group of industrialized countries. It is also an essential project for Korea, which is one of the major automobile manufacturing countries. This project is composed of three research projects. The first one is about the reduction of the death and injury rates in relation to traffic accidents. The second is to improve safety standards and develop assessment strategies for those standards. The third is to embrace emerging Information Technology, to optimize the new technologies. Research to decrease death and injury rates in traffic accidents consists of three research topics, improvement of crash safety devices, and safety improvement in vehicle-to-vehicle crash compatibility and prevention of driver's negligence.-
