- Abstract
- 본 논문은 19세기 중엽 대표적 중국 근대 지식인인 王韜에게 있어서 上海라는 공간이 어떤 의미였는가 하는 점을 밝히고자 하는데 그 목적이 있다. 王韜가 上海에서 활동하였던 시기는 두 시기로 구분된다. 첫째는 1849년부터 墨海書館에서 일하였던 13년 동안의 시기이며, 둘째는 오랜 망명생활을 접고 다시 上海로 돌아온 1885년부터 1897년까지 格致書院 山長으로 일하였던 시기이다. 중ㆍ서 문화교류의 중심지였던 上海에서 王韜는 서양을 중국과는 또 다른 문명세계로 인정하게 되었으며, 실용을 중시하는 서양의 교육풍토를 格致書院에서 직접 실천하기 위해 노력하였다.
