- Abstract
- Writing is as important as other language skills for English learners since
they need to communicate with native and non-native speakers of English in
this international world by expressing their ideas accurately and appropriately
in both oral and written English. What makes writing instruction more
complicated is the fact that research has merely shown a significant
relationship between reading and writing as it has in listening and speaking.
It is clear that writing itself should be explicitly taught to English leaners in
class. The purpose of this study is to see how two types of writing
strategies; copying and summarizing; are useful in improving Korean college
students' English writing skill. Eight students, divided into two groups for
each writing activity, participated in this study. They chose one editorial from
any English newspaper to either copy or summarize it everyday during one
semester. Interestingly enough, copying practice was found to be effective for
less proficient students; whereas, summarizing practice was found to be
effective for more proficient students in writing. Suggestions are made for
further research.
