Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to obtain the knowledge for the unit-space design on the changing public libraries This study used secondary information as the main mechanism for research and the author also collected information by drawing plan-form and layout of each library and by observing library users’ behavior. 16 public libraries were surveyed and followings are results. 1) Unit-space design heavily impacts on layout of the library furniture. 2) There is a variety of reading spaces in recently built libraries. 3) Segregated and various types of reading spaces are library users’ need. In sum, the author suggests guidelines for unit space design in public libraries.
