Abstract
Flexible residential space is needed in order to lengthen the life span of residential buildings and to adapt to the changes of residents' life styles. The construction of apartment buildings has been on the rise since the concept of flexible space planning has been adopted in 2000. From this perspective, this study was conducted to investigate a trend of residential buildings with this concept, as well as the types of flexible space planning. Flexible housing types, which have been appeared between 2000 and 2008, were studied, and the area of investigation was limited to Seoul, Korea. The distribution and types of flexible housing were investigated for all types of pyeongs. The results of this study showed that there are 33 types of flexible space planning, Since the first appearance of a flexible space between the living room and the kitchen in 2000, the type has been expanded to various types, such as a flexible space between the living room and the family room, and a flexible space between rooms and the living room. Various flexible space types are being developed to adapt to the life cycle and the life style of residents.
