- Abstract
- In Korean elementary English education, writing has not been given proper attention while major language acquisition studies consent on the beneficial effect of teaching oral and written language modes together. On the other hand, influenced by the philosophy of whole language, English picture storybooks have been used as a teaching tool in the form of story telling mainly outside the mainstream school system. This article explores possibilities of linking picture storybooks, children’s literature to writing in the elementary English classroom. It, first, looks into the significance of meaningful writing in L2 children’s literacy development. Then, it points out negative aspects of traditional methods of teaching writing for L2 child. On the basis of this understanding, this article seeks out characteristics of picture storybooks which enable meaningful writing in L2 children’s learning. The article concludes that a picture storybook is an effective language material for L2 children’s writing. As a result, it recommends using picture storybooks for extensive reading and as a springboard for authentic writing in the elementary English classroom.
