- Abstract
- The purpose of this study is to analyze the color expression method and characteristics exhibited in <Hangungdo 6-fold screen>, a late 19th to early 20th-century folding screen painting from the Joseon Dynasty. The study aims to understand how traditional Oriental painting techniques and foreign painting styles are integrated to create a unique architectural painting style. The research examines <Hangungdo 6-fold screen> to identify the color expression techniques employed, focusing on methods such as color banding and gradation color banding. Through the analysis of these techniques, the study explores how traditional coloring methods are adapted within architectural painting contexts. The analysis reveals that 《Hangungdo》 effectively blends traditional Oriental painting materials with foreign painting styles to depict imaginary palaces inspired by Chinese architectural styles. The painting utilizes techniques that emphasize building exteriors and landscapes, enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal of the artwork. This study contributes to the modernization of traditional painting methodologies by showcasing how Hangungdo represents a unique form of architectural painting. By understanding the methods used to express decorative beauty in court decorative painting within architectural contexts, this research provides insights into the evolution of traditional art forms and their relevance in contemporary artistic practices.
