Abstract
Folding screens have been treated mainly from a functional aspect as practical and decorative furniture. The purpose of this paper is to examine folding screens not only for their functionality but also as objects of spatial experience due to pictoriality and sense of place, to suggest that folding screens have the potential for visual and perceptual expansion not only as a practical visual medium but also as a sensory medium based on the body. The subjects of the study were Byeon Gwan-sik's 6-panel <Village by the Waterside>, Lee Sang-beom's 10-panel <The Way Home>, Lee Sang-beom's 8-panel <Sangosujang>, and 10-panel <The King's Journey>. The theoretical background is based on Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology, which talks about the interaction between subjects and objects and their relationship with the world through the perception of the body, and the paintings of Paul Cézanne and the installation works of Richard Serra, representative artists of phenomenological perception. It is not about the simple shape of an object, but about the phenomenon by which an object is perceived, the perceptual process of Cézanne, who tried to express the world with lines and colors, and the relationship between space, object, and subject by Richard Serra, who was interested in the body's perception of space. This is in line with the characteristics of the Joint Panels landscape folding screens , which is the creation of a panoramic space of landscape paintings and folding screens based on Wayuu. Folding screens have a wide range of movable installation, and because they are three-dimensional, the expandability of space is very large. For installation, the folded surface varies the viewpoint, and the width and depth of the long folding screen can be made flexible by changing the folding angle, and the connection of spaces changes depending on the installation location, and the movement through the space is possible. You can experience sensory changes through it. The perceived experience also varies depending on the installation location and arrangement, and involves an experiential perception process in which lines, colors, and space come together through the body. In particular, the folding surface of the folding screens makes a change of tone according to light and form, and the movement of the body draws the subtle change of color in more variable situations. If we apply the phenomenological perception of the body to expand the folding screen, which has been viewed as a practical piece of furniture, into a medium for the body's three-dimensional sensory experience of lines, colors, and space, the meaning of the folding screen will further expand in this era where the division of time and space is becoming more flexible due to the development of technology.
