Hoe Semoon, Park Yugyeong & Lim Dongsik. 2017. A Scope-based Approach to the Interaction of Modal and Aspect in Korean Korean Journal of Linguistics. 42-4, 927-959. This squib attempts to show that the interpretation of the Korean modal -ul kes-i is determined by its location with respect to the perfect aspect -ess. Unlike the previous studies including Mun (2014), it is argued that the linear order of the modal and the aspect on the surface reflects the scopal relations in their logical forms, and thus it supports Condoravdi’s (2002) scope-based analysis on the interaction of modals and aspects.
