dc.description.abstract | The purpose of this study is to analyze and understand the transition and respondence of the stage space composition and stage machinery in theaters ranging from ancient Greek to Renaissance era, and to provide base knowledge and understanding for modern stage space. The findings are as follow: in Greek period, stage facilities were developed especially in Hellenistic period, but they were at an early stage. The size of the stage and scaenae frons became bigger in Roman imperial period, but with little progress in stage setting. During medieval era. Various mansions were designed and built as stage itself or background. Special effects and machines demanded for religious dramas were actively developed. The remarkable development occurred during Renaissance, especially in Italy. Utilization of perspective on stage and various mechanical system with technique enhanced stage scenery and conversion method greatly. Appearance of proscenium arch, with these developments, started to generate additional stage areas and components very similar to those in modern stage. Different from other earlier eras, stage machinery was not an appendage to stage space any more in Renaissance. Rather, it helped shape and define the new type of stage space. | - |
