Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore theaters in Daegu, and the mass culture formed around them through many kinds of data published during the Japanese colonial period. The results are as follows. The interest in building a movie theater in Daegu occurred in the summer of 1905, and Sangjeonryeoksong attempted to build a movie theater similar to Haengjwa in Busan in the early March of 1906, but it failed. In March, 1907, at Geumjeong, Jungchonhuiil built Geumjwa, the first theater in Daegu. In 1911, at Daehwajeong, Sibwoncharang set up Daegugurakbu, the first movie theater in Daegu. In January, 1916, there was a movie theater, Chilseonggwan at Chonsangjeong, whose name was changed to Daeyeonggwan(August, 1924), Daegyeonggwan(January 1, 1929), and Horakgwan(August 12, 1933) in turn. In late October, 1917, Daegujwa, a drama theater was opened at Jeonjeong. On August 31, 1920, Joseongwan, a movie theater for Koreans, was opened at Gyeongjeong, but it was burned down on December 21,1920. On March 7, 1923, Mangyeonggwan, a movie theater for Koreans, was opened at the place of the former Joseongwan. There was a movie theater, Daesonggwan at Jeonjeong in 1923. Its name was changed to Daeyeonggwan(June, 1927), Somyeonggwan (1929), Sohwagwan(June, 1930), Sinheunggwan(1932?), and Daegusongjukyeonghwageukjang(July, 1949) in turn. There existed a movie theater, Yeongrakgwan at Jeonjeong, whose name was once changed to Daegudongbogeukjang just before the Independence from Japan. Daegukinemagurakbu was opened at Dongseongjeong in 1938, and its name was changed to Daegubochonggeukjang in 1943. In November, 1931, Daegugonghoedang, a cultural institution, was opened in front of Daegu station. What is to be done in future is to reveal the exact opening dates of some movie theaters such as Chilseonggwan, and to find out the socio-cultural meaning of the movie theaters in Daegu.
