E&O (Excess and Obsolete) Inventory is the most typical problem for many high-tech product manufacturers in product transition periods. The companies of these technology-initiative products such as PDP/LCD TVs and mobile phones are likely set the highest priority in bringing out the highest performing products to the market sooner to enjoy the early mover's advantage- market share and profits. Then they soon realize their finished goods and raw material inventories have remarkably increased during the product transitions. They might attribute this pain in product transition to inaccurate forecast of sales or unstability of the early markets, which seem irrational. Instead, they should realize there must be something they can do to prevent the reoccurrence of the same problem. Such E&O problem in product transition is difficult to control even with the most powerful APS (Advanced Planning & Scheduling) solution because the sophisticated planning logics of APS are optimized to solve the demand and supply balance problems in statable volume production period. PTP (Product Transition Planning) is a newly introduced concept designed to solve the E&O inventory problem with a viewpoint of dealing NPL (New Product Launch) and EOL (End Of Life) issues simultaneously with consideration of the constraints arisen from development and procurement. This paper, for the first time, raises the voice of the product transitional E&O problem as an outcome of lacking of an advance and collaborative planning of NPL and EOL.-
