Abstract
This study investigated university students’ needs regarding mobile applications for English learning. A total of 302 undergraduates participated in the present study: 251 students in the main survey and 51 in the follow-up survey. Results indicated that participants showed a moderately favorable attitude toward mobile applications for learning English; however, they did not use these applications much in their daily life. Several reasons were given: (a) the applications did not match the students’ English levels; (b) they lacked desirable functions, (c) they were not interesting; (d) they lacked desirable content; (e) they lacked promotional advertising for the applications; (f) using a smartphone is not appropriate for educational purposes; (g) using the applications drains battery power; and (h) uses too much mobile data. Participants reported that they wanted to improve their speaking, listening, and vocabulary through mobile applications for learning English. The most desired applications were ones that deliver American movies and TV dramas, CNN news, and readings with vocabulary glosses. Also desired were mobile applications for speaking, listening, reading, vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, and integrated skills. The study’s findings will be useful for organizations and individuals who design or develop mobile applications for English learning targeted at university students in Korea
