Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the association of depression, suicidal ideation, suicidal planning, and suicidal attempts with academic performance among adolescents using data from the 15th Korean Youth Health Risk Behavior Survey. Methods: A total of 57,069 students were analyzed. We analyzed the relationship between academic performance and depression, suicidal behavior using multivariate survey logistic regression analysis. Results: Results showed that depression, suicidal behavior were associated with academic performance, socio-demographic factors, and health behavior factors. Multivariate survey logistic regressions revealed that depression, suicidal behavior increased when the academic performance is low(subjective depression: odds ratio (OR) 1.22; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.13 to 1.33; suicidal ideation: OR 1.12; 95% CI 1.01 to 1.25; suicidal planning: OR 1.20; 95% CI 1.02 to 1.41; suicidal attempts: OR 1.28; 95% CI 1.06 to 1.54). Conclusion: A statistically significant relationship was found in Korean adolescents between academic performance and depression, as well as academic performance and suicidal behavior. Therefore, we recommend that government agencies and policy makers pursue the development of youth mental health intervention programs, implementing them continuously and effectively among each targeted sub-group and according to the specific characteristics of each group.-
