Abstract
Musical film indicates a movie focusing on song and dance, which is called US or Hollywood musical. The importance of sound began to rise as the silent film developed to sound film and it was the opportunity for musical films to be developed. The theme music of a musical film naturally connects the flow of movie through the songs by main characters and also acts as the narrative. This research examined how the theme music was used by the deployment of narrative in six scenes with “City of Stars”, rhythm, composition of musical instruments, lyrics and overall atmosphere of the music as well as the impact of change in tempo on the structure of narrative. As a result of research, the theme music “City of Stars”was played in the six most important scenes from the beginning of two main characters’ love to its end, which was confirmed to contain the whole summary of <La La Land>. Also, it was found that each scene had musical styles and tempo in accordance with the flow of narrative. Lastly, the theme music varied in terms of how it was sung and played depending on the psychological status of Sebastian and Mia. “City of Star”is a good example that theme music could be deployed in the most important scenes leading the narrative of movie and it could summarize the narrative of the whole movie.
