Abstract
This study aims to analyze writings related to a series of Seongcheon experiences Lee sang left in the light of the discovery of native country of the 1930s. However, conclusively the essays based on Seongcheon experiences have nothing to do with the discovery of native country of the 1930s. Nevertheless, as Lee sang’s essays are examined considering the contemporary context dealing with the discovery of native country of the 1930s, they have the advantage of focusing on their unique features different from other writings, and at the same time exploring more clearly the prestige in Lee sang’s literature. The findings are summarized as follows. As Lee sang expressed his disillusion against Tokyo, the capital of Japan, he didn’t follow modern times blindly. However, he didn’t try to look for comfort by retrograding to pre-modernism. Although he received composure in pre-modern space for a short time, he didn’t idealize it as the pure space and tried to look dispassionately at the contradiction of hybridity. He intended to show the empty space perception honestly instead of aestheticizing the pre-modern space as the space with special value. He admitted that it existed not only in the calm and peaceful world but also in the incomprehensible space making worry and fear. Nevertheless, he didn’t yield and wasn’t self-sufficient to keep modern personal identity. That is why Lee Sang’s essays has different prestige from other writings although his essays dealing with Seongcheon Experiences are in line with native country of the 1930s in the same period.
