- Abstract
- The pastoral leadership style in Korean churches, which is characterized as formalistic authoritatianism, is claimed as the main reason to trigger inner conflict or discouragement as well as to lead into restoring the essence of the leadership formation. The illuminating insights of Calvin’s understanding of church and the contemporary ideas of leadership theory is playing a pivotal role in presenting the paradoxical nature of the faith community and leader- ship formation. The communal discernment is introduced within its biblical resources from the apostolic council of Jerusalem (Acts 15:1-35). The histor- ical document about the communal discernment stemming from Ignatian tra- dition is explored as the historical heritage for complementary and trans- formative tool for pastoral leadership in Korean churches. At next, it deliber- ately articulates the details of the procedures and guides in practicing the communal discernment as spiritual practice in faith community context. At last, as practical implication in Korean pastoral context, it delineates the way in which the communal discernment could effectively be embodied as equip- ped with the authentic understanding of the spiritual indifference, its dynam- ic of process, and authority.
