- Abstract
- This thesis examined the character of individual in Lee Gwang-su's Editorials. The individual which Lee Gwang-su insisted on in the 1910s is inconsistent. He showed modern awareness against feudal convention. Whereas Lee Gwang-su did not show modern awareness in connection with nation. Individual was only a component of nation. Lee Gwang-su regarded individual as the way to build up a nation-state in 1910s' Editorials. Originally national connectedness can imagine after people abolish feudal discrimination. Editorials that Lee Gwang-su writed in 1910s can be understood in the national context. After 1920s, Lee Gwang-su stressed the nation furthermore. As a result of that, An absolute Ego which may be interpreted ‘Individual=Nation’ came into being. Lee Gwang-su's nation is imaginary identification with individual. Lee Gwang-su maintained An absolute Ego which may be interpreted ‘Individual=Nation’ all through his life. Therefore, the individual and nation in Lee Gwang-su's Editorials was not individual or nation. Lee Gwang-su's individual was not modern individual, and didn't have autonomy and independence. An absolute Ego led to totalitarianism (‘individual=Chosun=Japan’). After this, An absolute Ego which may be interpreted ‘Individual=Nation’ developed into the thesis that is ‘individual=Chosun=Japan=Asia’.
