- Abstract
- The number of churches where praise and worship service is offered is increasing fast in Korean society. Why does such rapid growth take place in Korean church which would be very reluctant to accept new ritual changes? It has its causes from societal, cultural, ministerial and spiritual challenges the Korean church has faced since 1990. This article is a study to show these causes and, at the same time, the effect the new worship service brought into Korean churches such as revival of worship in Korean Christians, especially in youth members, increasing participation of lay people in preparing and leading worship, and quantitative and qualitative progress of Christian culture. The new ritual also created several problems related to the worship, that is, spiritual and emotional unbalance, low quality in music work, lack of support for worship team and worship leaders by church leadership, inefficiency in operating worship team by worship leaders, endangering the nature of worship caused by accepting secular ways of leading and playing worship songs, and so forth. This study gives some suggestions to make and keep the praise and worship service to fit more to the biblical guideline on worship.
