알레고리와 상징- 구조와 특징 비교 연구

Abstract

알레고리와 상징은 메타포를 바탕으로 연상을 전제로 하고 있다는 점에서는 서로 유사하다. 그러나 이 둘은 구조 및 논제적 관점에서 상이한 차이를 보인다. 상징이 언어와 표상 사이에 동일한 것을 쫓는 반면, 알레고리는 언어와 표상 간의 서로 다름을 통해 의미를 추구한다. 즉 상징은 연상체계를, 그리고 알레고리는 사고체계를 각각 그 전제로 하고 있다. 이러한 특징적 차이로 인해 상징과 알레고리는 현실에 대해서도 서로 상이한 관계를 형성한다. 즉 상징이 현실과 하나가 된 조화로운 세계로 나아가는 반면, 알레고리는 현실에 대해 역동적 변화를 꾀한다. 알레고리가 내포한 이러한 현실 부정적 태도와 대안적 사고를 유도하는 본래의 기능은 안타깝게도 괴테의 상징편향 태도와 알레고리 폄하발언 이후로 간과되어 왔다. 그러나 알레고리는 필수불가결할 뿐만 아니라, 현실세계에 변화와 역동성을 촉발하는 중요한 수사법이다.

This study investigated the characteristic of allegory and symbol in the way of double aspects: on the one hand an allegorical Scheme, on the other a comparison of symbol. The symbol has gained its significance through the competition with allegory and has become as a symmetrical conception to allegory. Between allegory and symbol lies the similarity that both of them are based on metaphors. Even though the difference between them appears especially in structure and theme. While the symbol seeks the identity between language and shape, the allegory pursues the difference between them. In other words the symbol has the premise of association-scheme, and the allegory requires the premise of thinking-scheme. As the result of these various attitudes to reality there is a different relationship. The symbol tends to unity with the real world, the allegory intends to change the existing situation in the world. The german poet Goethe who are an authority on literary criticism in the epoche of german classic underestimated the meaning of allegory that has the power of critical stance and to change reality, showing his favoritism toward symbol. It is a pity that allegory has been neglected since then. At any rate the allegory is indispensible and a significant rhetoric to bring energetic possibilities of changing the real world.
