김동리와 황순원 시의 죽음의식 고찰

Abstract

소설가 김동리와 황순원은 한국문학사 전개에 있어 작품세계의 수준에 있어서나 후학을 길러낸 교육자로서나 쌍벽을 이룬다고 할 수 있다. 그런데 두 사람은 모두 등단 초기에는 시를 썼었고 살아생전에 2권의 시집을 출간하였다. 시집에 수록되지 않은 시도 상당량 되며, 노년기에 다시 시를 열심히 썼다는 것도 공통점이다. 시에서 출발하여 시로 돌아간 두 사람의 시를 비교한 글은 아직 학계에 나온 바 없다. 김동리의 시는 거의 연구된 바가 없으며, 황순원의 시는 극소수 문학평론가가 다루긴 했지만 학술지에 발표된 논문은 지금까지 발견하지 못했다. 이에 연구자는 두 사람의 시에 공통적으로 나타나는 ‘죽음의식’을 살펴봄으로써 시세계를 비교ㆍ고찰해보려고 한다. 연구 결과, 김동리는 고분이 즐비한 고도(古都) 경주에서 태어나서 그런지 많은 시가 죽음을 다루고 있다. 그런데 그의 시에는 불교에서 말하는 윤회나 전생(轉生), 기독교에서 말하는 부활이나 구원의 개념은 보이지 않고 죽음 이후에는 저승세계로 간다는 무속적 죽음관이 뚜렷하였다. 역사의식이나 사회의식 혹은 시대의식 대신 개인적인 고독감과 인정세태, 자연과 사물을 대상으로 한 친화의 시적 경지를 지향하였다. 즉, 죽음으로써 모든 것이 사라져버리는 비극적 인식을 지니고 있던 그는 시에서 시대의식을 배제하였다. 황순원은 고등학생 때 동경 유학생의 신분으로 펴낸 시집에서 시대 상황을 십분 반영, 첨예한 현실참여의식을 보여주었다. 이 시집이 문제되어 29일 동안 구류를 살고 나서는 극단적으로 짧은 시를 쓰면서 언어의 절대순수를 지향하였다. 장년기와 노년기에 발표한 시를 보면 생로병사의 마지막 단계에 오는 자연사를 다루고 있다. 초기에는 누군가의 물리적인 힘에 의해 야기되는 죽음을 초인적인 의지로 거부하라고 말했지만 말기에는 죽음을 자연현상의 하나로 받아들이는 것으로 죽음의식이 바뀐다.

Both novelists having left their mark in the history of Korean literature, Kim Tong-ni and Hwang Sun-Won share several similarities. The two of them made their literary debut with poetry and published two poetry collections during their respective lifetime. Thirty poems by Kim Tong-ni were published in literary magazines after his death, and Hwang Sun-Won also continued writing poetry until his late seventies. The poetry of Kim Tong-ni has rarely been studied, and while four literary critics have dealt with the poetry of Hwang Sun-Won, the poetry of the two authors have not yet been comparatively studied. In this article, the consciousness of the times and death consciousness displayed in the poetry of the two authors are being comparatively considered.Many of Kim Tong-ni's poetry address death, perhaps a reflection of his background of being born in the historic city of Gyeongju, abundant in ancient tombs. The Buddhist notion of samsara and previous existence or the Christian notion of resurrection and salvation are missing in Kim's poetry, while a shamanistic view of death is distinct. Consciousness of history, society and the current times is apparently absent from his poetry, oriented towards the sense of personal solitude, the ways of the world, life and men, and the poetic state of harmony with things and nature. In short, consciousness of the times was strictly excluded from Kim Tong-ni's poetry, possessing a pessimistic view of life where everything disappears with death.Hwang Sun-Won displayed an acute sense of engagement in the reality by fully reflecting the historic situation in his poetry collection published while he was attending high school in Japan. After being released following 29 days of confinement caused regarding this publication, he wrote extremely short poems and pursued the absolute pureness of language. His later works, published occasionally after his middle age, deal with natural death as the last of four phases of life. Hwang's death consciousness undergoes a change where it initially rejects with a superhuman will the death caused by somebody's physical power, but goes on to accept death as a natural phenomenon in the later part of his career.
