영화 <유로파 유로파>에 대한 고찰 - 유대인소년의 성장과 정체성 탐구 -

Abstract

2차 대전 속의 유태인 소년으로서, 정착할 곳을 찾지 못한 솔로몬의 근원적 정체성 문제를 이 영화는 다루고 있다. 또한 이데올로기라는 문제 뿐 만 아니라 인종, 언어, 종교 등의 문제까지 포함되어 복합적이고 다각적인 역사적 모습들을 보여주는 영화를 통해 주인공 솔로몬에 영향을 미치는 근대인간의 형성과 성장가능성의 의미를 영화 속에서 살펴보려 한다. 인간에 대한 고민과 정체성을 확립하려는 주인공 솔로몬을 괴롭히는 문제인 자기본위(Self-Centered)와 생존(Survival)의 특징들이 영화의 플롯 및 결말부의 양상과 긴밀한 상관관계를 형성하고 있다는 것은 매우 흥미로운 사실이다. 따라서 이데올로기 속의 정체성에 관한 문제와 유대인 소년의 성장 및 정체성 탐구에 대해 알아보았다. 그 결과 과거, 현재에 존재했던 자신이 실제의 나가 아님을 말하며, 다른 나를 꿈꾸는 주인공 솔로몬은 삶의 근원적 의미를 찾는데 필연적으로 실패할 수밖에 없다. 온전한 ‘나’이면서 ‘나’아닌 것이 되고 싶다는 이 모순은 영화 <유로파 유로파>를 의미심장하게 만든다.

This movie deals with the problems of fundamental identification of Solomon who didn't obtain non-attributable place as a jewish boy in World War Two. In addition to the problem of ideology, this movie includes the problem of the race, the language and the religion to show the complicated, multilateral looks of history. I also try to investigate the meaning of possibility of a process of his growth and possibility of the formation of modern humans influencing to the main character, Solomon. The characters like the self-centered and the survival that are the problems passing through the main character, Solomon trying to establish the identification and worrying about his existence form a close association with the aspect of ending part and with the plot of a movie. To capture such facts is very interesting. I had an intention to make a research on the crisis of identification including the problem of the growth of jewish boy and on the ideology. At the result of studying these elements, I found that oneself who has existed in the past and in the present is not the oneself who, really, has existed. Solomon who has dreamed of another myself could be self-deceptive person. The contradiction that 'complete me' wants also to be 'not-me' made <Europa Europa> be significant.
