윤리 추론의 평가 - 웰만의 ‘도전과 응수’ 방법을 중심으로

Abstract

웰만(Carl Wellman)은 윤리 추론을 ‘도전과 응수’의 과정으로 특징짓고, 그것을 분석하고 평가하는 절차를 제시한다. 도전이라 함은 문제되는 윤리 진술이 합당한 이유에 의해 뒷받침된다는 주장에 대한 도전이다. 그리고 응수는 이런 도전에 대응하여 자신의 합리성 주장이 적절한 것임을 옹호하는 것이다. 웰만의 윤리 추론 평가 절차는 기본적으로 여러 시각 내지는 관점에 걸쳐서 전진과 후퇴가 반복되는 반성의 방식인 ‘심사숙고’ 내지는 ‘심의’에 의한 것이다. 이런 심사숙고의 과정은 다소 모호하기에 그 실질적인 적용을 위해서는 사례에 의해 구체화할 필요가 있다. 웰만의 방식이 다소 수정되고 구체적으로 적절하게 이해된다면, 적어도 윤리적 측면에서 인간 삶의 맥락을 잘 반영할 수 있는 온당한 방식이 될 수 있다고 논증한다.

This paper relates to evaluating ethical reasoning, which is characterized by Carl Wellman's method of challenge and response. Wellman analyzes and defines characteristics of the ethical reasoning, and presents procedures of evaluating them. It is claimed that such procedures of analysis and evaluation for the ethical reasoning are, if somewhat modified and properly understood, appropriate in view of contextual requirements of human life.
