신라의 五陵과 시조 인식

Abstract

본 논문은 신라의 왕경이었던 경주에 신라를 건국한 시조왕 능역으로 전승되고 있는 ‘오릉’의 자료적 가치를 검토하면서 시조인식과의 관계를 살펴본 것이다. 오릉은 ≪삼국유사≫에도 신라 시조왕의 능으로 소개되어 있는데, 검토결과 현재 경주지역에 시조릉으로 전승되고 있는 오릉이 문헌자료에서 시조릉으로 전했던 그 ‘오릉’으로 이해할 수 있었다. 그러므로 경주지역의 오릉은 신라 초기사와 관련하여 자료로서의 가치를 가지고 있다고 보았다. 그렇지만 고고학적인 정황에서 볼 때 오릉은 문헌기록과 같이 신라 건국 초기에 만들어진 것으로 보기는 어려웠다. 오릉 가운데는 표형분이 있다거나, 봉분 한가운데가 함몰된 고분도 있었다. 이러한 특징은 적석목곽분의 묘제적 특징을 보여주는 것으로, 봉분의 규모가 비교적 크다는 점에서도 적석목곽분이 포함되어 있을 가능성이 있었다. 적석목곽분은 마립간기에 유행한 묘제라는 점에서 오릉의 조성연대는 마립간기를 상한으로 하고 있음을 보여준다. 묘제적 특징에서 오릉은 마립간기에 조성된 것으로 이해할 수 있는데, 눌지왕대 역대 왕릉에 대한 인공적인 손질이 있었음을 보여주고 있는데 오릉과 관련이 있을 가능성을 제기하였다. 그러므로 오릉이 문헌기록과 같이 시조왕으로 전승되는 혁거세나 기타 신라 건국 초기 왕들이 피장된 것으로 보기는 어려웠다. 그렇지만 오릉이 신라의 시조인식과 관련하여 자료로서 가치는 가지고 있는 것으로 보았다.오릉이 시조 전승과 무관한 지역에 훗날 부회해서 조성되었다고 보기는 어려웠다. 오릉은 후대에 조성된 것이긴 하지만 시조릉으로서 계획적으로 만들어졌던 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 마립간기는 김씨들이 대두하여 신라의 왕위를 독점하게 되는 시기였다. 적석목곽분을 사용하는 김씨 세력들은 새롭게 경주지역에 이주한 세력으로, 이들은 범부족적인 차원에서 국가 시조로 혁거세를 내세웠다. 현재의 오릉은 마립간기에 혁거세를 신라의 건국시조로 내세우는 과정에서 정비된 것으로 이해하였다. 그런데 오릉은 시조왕으로 전승되는 혁거세와 관련성을 찾기는 어려웠다. 오릉 경내에 알영 탄생과 관련된 알영정이 소재하고 있다는 점, 능호에 보이는 뱀이 수신적, 지모신의 성격을 가진다는 것, 오릉의 위치인 수변지역과 관련을 가지고 있는 용이 알영 전승의 주요 신화소라는 점 등에서 오릉은 오히려 시조비로 알려진 알영과 친연성을 보이고 있었다. 이에 사로국 단계에서는 알영이 시조로 인식되었을 가능성을 제기하였다. 마립간기는 시조묘에서 신궁으로 전환되는 등 국가 제사에 있어서 변화가 보이는 시점이다. 신궁제사는 단순한 제사의 변화만이 아니라 조상시조인식에 대한 변화를 수반하는 것이다. 그러므로 마립간기에 시조인식에 있어서 정리가 있었으며, 그에 따라 시조릉으로 오릉이 재정비된 것으로 이해했다.

This study aims to examine the true nature and historical value of Five Tombs (5reung) which are known as tombs for progenitor king of Silla in Gyeongju, royal capital. It means new approach to the problem of the progenitor of Silla. In the archaeological context, it is difficult to think that present Five Tombs were made as tombs for progenitor king in the early period of Silla, although it was recorded in Samguksagi (Official History of Three Kingdoms) and Samgungnyusa (Tale of Three Kingdoms). We can see the style of wooden chamber tomb with stone mound in Five Tombs. Because of this style, I think that the earliest constructing time of Five Tombs can be the time of Maripgan. However, it is difficult to think that Five Tombs relating to progenitor were constructed in the region which was not related to the legend of progenitor. It is necessary to make new approach to the historicity of Five Tombs. In this study, I think that Five Tombs were related to Aryeong, the queen of progenitor king. Hyeok-geo-se, the progenitor king of Silla was not recognized as progenitor in the time of Saroguk, the matrix of Silla. In the time of Saroguk, Aryeong was recognized as progenitor. However, Hyeok-geo-se was made as the progenitor of state in the nationwide level by the rise of the power of Kim clan and the development of Saroguk to be Silla combining to neighboring Jinhan powers. Therefore, the place for the commemoration of progenitor could be organized to be the tomb area for progenitor king. It was connected to the recognition that Hyeok-geo-se was progenitor of Silla and Five Tombs were known as the tombs for King Hyeok-geo-se.
