소득, 물질주의와 행복의 관계

Abstract

이 논문의 목적은 소득수준과 물질주의 가치관이 한국인의 행복에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 밝히는 데 있다. 이를 위해 전국 18세 이상의 남녀를 대상으로 수집한 2009년 한국종합사회조사(KGSS) 자료를 분석하였다. 분석결과는 소득수준이 높을수록 행복감과 삶의 만족도가 높아지지만 물질주의 가치관은 행복감과 삶의 만족도에 부정적인 영향을 미친다는 사실을 보여준다. 물질주의 가치관을 가진 응답자, 즉 인생을 살아가는데 중요한 요소로 돈을 선택한 사람들은 그렇지 않은 사람들에 비해 낮은 수준의 행복감과 삶의 만족도를 가졌다. 주목할 만한 사실은 물질주의 가치관이 응답자의 소득수준에 따라 차별적 효과를 갖지는 않는다는 것이다. 즉, 소득이 상승하더라도 물질주의 가치관이 갖는 부정적 효과는 감소되지 않았다. 이러한 결과는 경제성장과 이윤획득을 최우선으로 하는 한국사회에서 과연 돈에 대한 맹목적인 추구가 행복에 긍정적인가에 대한 사회적 성찰과 논의가 필요함을 함의한다.

The present study aims to examine if and how household income and attitude toward money(materialism) affect happiness and life satisfaction in Korea. The Korean General Social Survey(KGSS) collected in 2009 was used for the study. The findings show that materialism is negatively associated with the happiness and life satisfaction of Koreans while household income is positively associated with the outcomes. Interestingly, in contrast to existing studies, household income does not have an interaction effect with materialism, which means that the negative effects of materialism on happiness and life satisfaction do not decrease even as the level of household income increases. The findings suggest that reflective discussion and social debate on Korean society, in which economic achievements and development have been the most valued, are required.
