한국 유아의 친족어 습득에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 연구의 목적은 유아의 친족어 습득을 조사하는 것이다. 연구 대상으로 서울 지역 유아교육기관에 재원하고 있는 만 3세 100명, 만 4세 100명, 만 5세 100명과 서울지역 초등학교에 재학하고 있는 만 6세 100명의 유아를 선정하였다. 총 400명의 유아를 대상으로 유아들이 4촌 이내에서 친족 관계를 맺고 있는 사람들을 칭하는 친가 친족어 10개 (할아버지, 할머니, 큰아버지, 큰어머니, 작은아버지/삼촌, 작은어머니, 고모, 고모부, 사촌, 고종사촌)와 외가 친족어 8개(외할아버지, 외할머니, 외삼촌, 외숙모, 외사촌, 이모, 이모부, 이종사촌)의 습득정도를 조사하였다. 연구 결과 첫째, 유아의 연령이 증가함에 따라 친족어 습득률이 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 구체적으로 만 5세와 6세의 친족어 습득률이 3, 4세에 비해 통계적으로 유의미한 수준에서 크게 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 3세에서 50%이상의 습득률을 나타낸 친족어는 할머니, 할아버지 2개에 그쳤으나 6세의 경우 50% 이상의 습득률을 보인 친족어는 할머니, 할아버지, 외할머니, 외할아버지, 이모, 고모, 작은아버지/삼촌, 고모부, 이모부 등 9개로 증가하였다. 둘째, 한국 유아의 친족어 습득은 전반적으로 성별에 따라 차이가 없는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 한국 유아의 친족어 습득은 친족어 개념의 복잡성에 따라 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구 결과는 유아의 친족어 교육을 위한 기초 자료로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

This study seeks to examine the factors involved in the successful acquisition of 18 Korean kinship terms by young children in Korea. The participants were a total of four-hundred young children aged 3 to 6 (100 children from each of the four age groups). The study method involved showing the children family trees and explaining the relationship between family members and then asking the children to describe their relationships using kinship terms. The results reveal that the number of kinship terms used by the children increases with age, and that the degree of acquisition advances significantly at the ages of 5 and 6. The results also showed that even at the age of 6 the participants had not acquired three kinship terms of address for cousins. The degree of acquisition was not related to the gender of the children whereas the degree of the children’ understanding and use of semantic complexity was predictive of the acquisition of kinship terms.
