초등학교 고학년 학생들의 외모에 대한 사회문화적 태도와 신념이 주관적 안녕감에 미치는 영향

Abstract

본 연구에서는 초등학교 고학년 학생들을 대상으로 이들이 지닌 외모에 대한 사회문화적 태도와 외모에 대한 신념 및 주관적 안녕감 간의 상호 관련성을 살펴보고, 외모에 대한 사회문화적 태도와 외모에 대한 신념이 주관적 안녕감에 미치는 직·간접적인 영향을 탐색하고자 하였다. 본 연구의 최종 분석 대상은 서울과 경기에 거주하는 초등학교 5, 6학년 재학생 443명이며, 이들의 평균 연령은 만 11.4세(SD=.50) 이었다. 본 연구 결과, 남학생에 비해 여학생이 외모에 대한 사회문화적 태도와 외모에 대한 신념을 더욱 강하게 지니고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 외모에 대한 사회문화적 태도는 주관적 안녕감에 직접적으로 부정적인 영향을 미쳤으며, 외모에 대한 신념에는 직접적으로 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 외모에 대한 신념은 주관적 안녕감에 직접적으로 부정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으며, 이는 외모에 대한 사회문화적 태도와 주관적 안녕감 간의 관계를 매개하는 것으로 나타났다.

This study was to investigate causal relationships between beliefs about appearance, sociocultural attitudes towards appearance, and subjective well-being of upper elementary school students. The participants were 443 (i.e., 230 males, 213 females) students in Seoul metropolitan cities, Korea. Their average age was 11.4 years. It was found that female students had stronger sociocultural attitudes towards appearance and beliefs about appearance than male students. The structural equation model for the participants supported that sociocultural attitudes towards appearance had negative direct and indirect effects on subjective well-being. Also, students' beliefs about intelligence had a negative direct effect on subjective well-being. Results are discussed in terms of their implications in school settings.
