사별과 우울에 대한 종단분석: 성차와 배우자와의 관계만족도를 중심으로

Abstract

이 연구는 배우자 사망이 한국노인의 우울에 미치는 영향을 종단 분석을 통해 검증하고 성별에 따른 사별효과의 차이를 탐구하는데 목적이 있다. 더불어 사별 이전 시점에 측정된 배우자와의 관계만족도에 따라 우울에 미치는 사별효과가 달라지는지를 분석하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 2006년 기준 60세 이상의 노인을 대상으로 2006년과 2008년도 ‘한국고령화패널조사’자료를 분석하였다. 분석결과는 사별이 우울의 수준을 높이지만 그 효과는 성별에 따라 다르다는 점을 보여준다. 먼저, 사별은 통계적으로 유의한 수준에서 남성노인의 우울을 높였으나 여성노인에게는 효과가 없었다. 그러나 사별 이전에 측정된 배우자와의 관계만족도의 효과를 분석해본 결과, 남성노인의 우울은 배우자와의 관계만족도에 관계없이 사별 후 증가하나 여성노인의 우울은 배우자 사망 전 배우자와의 관계만족도가 긍정적일 경우에 한해 사별 후 우울이 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 결론에서는 이러한 분석결과를 성별에 따른 성역할규범 및 사회적 역할의 차이에서 기인한 노년기 부부관계에 기반해 논의한다.

This study aims to examine if and how spousal loss is associated with depressive symptoms of Korean older adults and has differential effects across men and women by analyzing a longitudinal data set. Also, it is analyzed if marital quality before spousal loss(t1) and spousal loss(t2) have an interaction effect on depressive symptoms. The data used are Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing(KLoSa) collected in 2006 and 2008. The findings show that spousal loss has differential effects across men and women. Spousal loss is significantly associated with depressive symptoms of men while it is not significant for women. Also, a significant and differential effect between spousal loss and marital satisfaction across men and women is detected. Spousal loss is associated with elevated depressive symptoms among women who had a higher level of marital satisfaction, not for widowers who had a lower level of martial satisfaction before spousal loss. In contrast, spousal loss increases the depressive symptoms of men regardless of marital satisfaction. The findings are explained by differences in marital relationships across older adult men and women, which is associated with gendered norms in Korea.
